    Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS material) is one of the most widely used engineering plastics, second only to polyethylene and polypropylene. ABS offers a balanced combination of impact strength, rigidity, processability, and aesthetic appeal. It exhibits particularly excellent impact resistance in low-temperature applications and is widely used in a variety of fields, including electronics and electrical equipment, automotive parts, toys, household consumer goods, office supplies, and home appliances.

    INEOS Strolution is renowned worldwide for the excellent performance and reliable supply of its Terluran® ABS, which is available for a wide range of applications, including injection molding, extrusion, electroplating, high-temperature applications, and medical-grade applications.

    This article will provide a detailed explanation of the key performance differences between INEOS TERLURAN and standard ABS, offering manufacturers a useful reference for material selection.

    1. What is INEOS Terluran ABS?

    Terluran ABS is a standard, high-performance ABS material produced by INEOS Styrolution, a globally renowned polymer supplier. This series of ABS is produced using the emulsion grafting process (eABS). Because the production process requires a large amount of emulsifier, the polymer contains a relatively high level of residual impurities; it is typically milky white or pale yellow in color and has a slight odor.

    INEOS Terluran ABS offers excellent gloss, stable color retention, impact resistance, and processability, and is used in many areas of daily life.

    INEOS GP22 and INEOS GP35 ABS are INEOS Styrolution’s most commonly used standard ABS grades
    • GP-22 being more widely used in the market due to its cost-effectiveness;
    • Due to its higher melt flow rate, GP35 ABS achieves a melt volume rate (MVR) of 35 cm³/10 min under test conditions of 220°C and 10 kg, making it more suitable for the production of thin-walled and complex products;
    • Another commonly used ABS material, INEOS HI-10, is better suited for applications requiring high impact resistance; its Charpy notched impact strength, tested at 23°C, reaches 35 kJ/m², which is significantly higher than that of conventional ABS materials.

    3. INEOS Terluran ABS application Examples

    As one of our top-selling polymer materials, our customers use INEOS Terluran ABS to manufacture a wide range of products. Below, we’ll use examples to illustrate the performance differences between various ABS materials.
    INEOS GP22 ABS Fan Housing
    The image on the left shows the main frame of an air purification unit duct housing manufactured using INEOS GP-22 ABS. It is made from a mixture of INEOS GP22 ABS natural color pellets and titanium dioxide. The product features a good gloss finish, a pure white appearance, and no visible defects.
    The product measures 35 × 35 × 10 cm, with a wall thickness ranging from a minimum of 3 mm to a maximum of 8 mm.
    Given the product’s large size and volume, moderate wall thickness, moderate impact resistance requirements, and high material consumption, INEOS GP-22 ABS—which offers moderate flow rate and is relatively low-cost—is the most suitable material for this application.

    The image on the left shows the main frame of a helmet made from INEOS Terluran HI-10 natural-color pellets. The product has a good gloss finish and can be transformed into a complete helmet through vacuum plating, electroplating, or transfer printing.
    According to the requirements of the Chinese standard GB 811-2022—“Headgear for Motorcycle and Electric Bicycle Riders”: For Class A helmets (motorcycles) and Class B helmets (electric bicycles), after being kept at -20±2°C for 4 hours, a drop test must be conducted such that, following an impact with a maximum acceleration of ≤275g, the impact hammer must not come into contact with the head.
    However, only INEOS HI-10 ABS achieves a Charpy notched impact strength of 13 kJ/m² at -30°C, meeting the aforementioned impact strength requirements for helmets; GP-22 ABS achieves only 8 kJ/m²; GP-35 ABS has even poorer low-temperature impact resistance, at only 7 kJ/m², and does not meet the requirements for helmet manufacturing.
