Why Choose ASA Instead of ABS for Outdoor Applications?

    2026-03-03
When designing products for outdoor environments, material selection directly determines product lifespan, appearance retention, and overall reliability. While ABS is widely used in indoor applications, ASA (Acrylonitrile Styrene Acrylate) offers clear advantages when products are exposed to sunlight, rain, temperature fluctuations, and harsh weather.

Below we will detail the specific advantages of ASA resin and the scenarios where this material should be selected.

    1. Superior UV Resistance

ABS performs well mechanically, but it is vulnerable to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Prolonged sun exposure can cause:
    • Surface chalking
    • Color fading
    • Brittleness
    • Cracking
As shown in the figure on the right, products made of ABS exhibit yellowing after prolonged outdoor use. While the yellowing appearance is merely superficial, the more critical issue is the deterioration in performance.
This condition stems from the inherent properties of ABS material. The yellowing of ABS plastic (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) occurs due to the breakdown of butadiene double bonds under the combined effects of light, oxygen, and heat. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation, high temperatures, and humidity accelerates this degradation. Crucially, this deterioration causes irreversible structural damage to ABS products. Merely removing surface yellowing cannot compensate for the resulting loss of product strength.

ASA, by contrast, is specifically engineered for weather resistance. Its acrylic rubber component provides excellent UV stability, allowing products to maintain color, gloss, and mechanical integrity over time.
For outdoor housings, enclosures, garden equipment, automotive exterior parts, and building components, this difference is critical.

    2. Outstanding Weatherability

Outdoor products face more than sunlight. They endure:

    • Rain and humidity

    • Temperature cycling

    • Cold winter conditions

    • Heat in summer

The image on the right illustrates how ABS products, when exposed to low outdoor temperatures, exhibit reduced flexibility. This leads to product fragmentation when subjected to external forces.
ABS exhibits a tendency for performance degradation in both high and low temperature environments. Particularly in extremely cold conditions below -20°C, ABS products become brittle and are therefore unsuitable for high-latitude regions like Russia. In contrast, ASA material maintains good flexibility even at -30°C and is less prone to fracture.
Additionally, ABS material degrades in high-temperature and humid environments, making it unsuitable for outdoor use in tropical regions characterized by high temperatures and humidity.

    3. Comparable Processability to ABS

One of the strongest advantages of ASA is that it processes similarly to ABS in injection molding and extrusion. Manufacturers can often switch to ASA with minimal tooling modifications while gaining significant performance improvements.

This makes ASA an efficient upgrade path rather than a disruptive material change.

When Should You Replace ABS with ASA?

You should strongly consider ASA when:

    • The product is continuously exposed to sunlight

    • Outdoor lifespan exceeds 2–3 years

    • Appearance retention is important

    • Brand durability is part of your value proposition

If the application is strictly indoor and cost-driven, ABS may remain suitable. But for outdoor use, choosing ABS simply because it is familiar can become a costly mistake.

Which manufacturers of ASA materials are available?

Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate resin (ASA material) is a novel polymer material currently offered by few manufacturers. As a specialized ASA material supplier, we recommend the following well-known brands and grades for your selection:
LG Chem LI911 ASA: An ASA material produced by South Korea's LG Chem, it is currently one of the most widely produced and extensively applied engineering plastics. Suitable for conventional applications, it offers the advantage of stable supply.
CHIMEI KIBILAC PW-957 ASA and Tairilac WG1800 ASA are ASA materials produced by Taiwan's CHIMEI Corporation and Formosa Chemicals and Fiber Corporation. With moderate production volumes, they are primarily used in China, East Asia, and Southeast Asia.
INEOS Luran S 778T ASA is an ASA material produced by INEOS Luran in South Korea and Germany. It enjoys widespread global application, having been manufactured for many years with stable performance and a reliable supply system. This material is extensively used in European and American markets.
