Which Material Is Safer for Drinking Water Bottles? (PET vs PC vs PCTG vs PPSU)

    2026-04-20
Choosing the right material for drinking water bottles is critical for health, safety, and long-term use. Common materials include PET, Polycarbonate (PC), PCTG, and PPSU, each with different performance, safety levels, and application scenarios.
This guide compares these materials to help you choose the safest option.

    1. Comparison of Different Materials

1.1 PET Material for Water Bottles (Single-Use Only)

    PET water bottle

Polyethylene terephthalate, also known as "PET," is a common packaging material for drinking water and carbonated beverages due to its good flexibility, airtightness, and low cost. It is designated by the number "1."

PET material is not inherently heat-resistant; when used in applications exceeding 60°C, the bottles are prone to deformation. It is not recommended for packaging hot-filled beverages or beverages that are heated to high temperatures. However, specially treated PET materials, such as JADE CZ-333, can be used for hot beverage packaging.

⚠️ Beverage bottles made from PET have thin walls, are not durable enough to withstand repeated washing, and have poor fatigue resistance. When subjected to high-temperature sterilization, they are prone to deformation and may even leach harmful substances; therefore, they are not recommended for repeated use.

1.2 Polycarbonate (PC) Water Bottles – Durable but Requires Safety Control

    polycarbonate drink water bottle
Polycarbonate, also known as "PC," is a transparent plastic (Transparency≥92%) with exceptional impact resistance. It was previously used in the production of sports water bottles, but it was later discovered that the primary component of polycarbonate continuously releases bisphenol A (a toxic substance proven to disrupt the human endocrine and nervous systems) during use. As a result, PC is now rarely used in products intended for drinking water.
Unlike conventional polycarbonate, Sabic PK2870 and Covestro Makron WB1239 polycarbonates are raw materials specifically designed for the production of 5-gallon drinking water buckets. These materials offer excellent safety for contact with food and drinking water, meet FDA food contact requirements, and are safe for use in the production of drinking water jugs and buckets. The materials exhibit stable processing performance, and the finished products are resistant to deformation.

1.3 PCTG – BPA-Free Material for Sports Water Bottles

    PCTG sports bottle
Polyethylene terephthalate-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol copolyester, also known as "PCTG," is an amorphous copolyester material that offers superior transparency (better than standard PC).
    • Compared to PET, PCTG can withstand temperatures exceeding 90°C. In particular, drinking water bottles made from Eastman Tritan TX1001 PCTG can withstand temperatures exceeding 95°C, making them ideal for the manufacture of high-temperature drinking water bottles. Additionally, this material complies with FDA certification requirements and can be washed and reused.
    • Compared to PC, PCTG does not contain bisphenol A and maintains good safety performance even after long-term use, so there is no need to worry about the leaching of harmful substances.
    • PCTG has become the primary material used in the production of sports water bottles.

Baiyou - As polymer supplier with 20+ years of experience, we recommend the products manufactured by Korean SK SKYGREEN JN200 PETG, This material has nearly identical performance characteristics to Eastman Tritan TX1001 PCTG, though it is slightly inferior in terms of high-temperature resistance. However, it offers significant cost advantages. If you have previously used Tritan TX1001 PCTG, we strongly recommend using SKYGREEN JN200 as a replacement material.

1.4 PPSU – The Safest High-Temperature Resistant Material

    ppsu bottle
Polyphenylsulfone, also known as "PPSU," is a new-generation engineering plastic that offers excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance, high toughness, and high strength. It is commonly used in the production of baby bottles that require repeated heating.
⚠️ Although polyphenylene sulfide (PPSU) offers excellent safety for contact with drinking water, as well as high heat resistance, resistance to repeated heating, and resistance to steam sterilization, finished products made from it have a slightly amber tint and are less aesthetically pleasing. Furthermore, its cost is relatively high compared to other materials used for drinking water bottles, so it is generally used for infant feeding bottles; only some high-end sports water bottles utilize PPSU material.

Ultrason P 3010, a polyphenylsulfone material manufactured by BASF AG, offers high strength, high hardness, high toughness, and resistance to boiling sterilization, making it an excellent choice for infant feeding bottles.

Ultrason P 3010 PPSU can withstand short-term exposure to temperatures of up to 220°C and long-term use at 180°C without any deterioration in material properties or leaching of harmful substances, making it suitable for infant feeding bottles that require frequent boiling sterilization.

In addition, Ultranson P 3010 PPSU is bisphenol A-free and has met FDA food contact certification requirements, making it suitable for applications in the food packaging sector and offering high material safety.

    3. How to Choose the Safest Water Bottle Material

    Choose based on your application:
    • Single-use bottled water → PET
    • Daily reusable bottles → PCTG (Recommended)
    • Large water containers (5-gallon) → Food-grade PC
    • Baby or high-safety needs → PPSU
